ChatGPT is where your next customer is searching. Here's how to get cited.

Something changed in how people research software. They used to Google and scan a list of blue links. Now a growing share of buyers — founders, operators, developers — opens ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Claude and types a direct question: 'what's the best tool for X?' or 'how do I solve Y?'

If your product doesn't appear in those answers, you don't exist for that buyer at the most important moment in their decision. This is the guide to changing that.

Why AI citations are different from search rankings

Getting ranked on Google and getting cited by ChatGPT are related problems, but they are not the same problem. Understanding the difference is what makes GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) a real skill rather than a repackaging of what you already know about SEO.

Search engines rank pages. AI systems cite content. The difference matters: a search engine sends a user to your page and they decide whether it's relevant. An AI assistant reads your page, extracts information from it, and incorporates that information directly into its answer — often without the user ever visiting your site. Citation is not a click. It is being part of the answer.

What determines whether AI systems cite your content:

  • Clarity and specificity. AI systems cite content that directly answers a question with a specific, quotable claim. Vague content that hedges and qualifies gets overlooked in favour of content that says something clear.
  • Structure. Content formatted as direct Q→A (FAQ sections) is preferentially cited because it is already in the format an AI answer takes. Lists with clear labels are cited more often than flowing prose.
  • External authority signals. AI systems are trained on human-curated content, which means they have learned to weight sources that other sources link to and mention. A product listed on G2, mentioned in a newsletter, or discussed in a Capterra review has more authority signals than a product that only exists on its own domain.
  • Consistency. A brand that appears the same way across its own site, directories, and social profiles is more easily associated with its subject matter by an AI model than a brand that is described differently in different places.

The GEO system — how to get your content cited by AI

Step 1 — Fix the foundation AI needs to read you

Before AI systems can cite you, they need to find and parse your content. The same technical requirements that unlock search indexing unlock AI crawler access.

  • Ensure your site has no noindex directives on pages you want cited
  • Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools — these feed multiple AI data pipelines
  • Make sure key pages load reliably and are not hidden behind authentication or JavaScript that blocks crawlers
  • Add Organization schema to your homepage and SoftwareApplication schema to your product page — these are the structured signals AI systems use to understand what your brand is

Step 2 — Write content in the format AI systems cite

The format question is simple: AI systems cite direct answers. Write in direct answer format.

  • FAQ sections on every key page. This is the single highest-impact change you can make. 8–12 questions and short, direct answers per page. Write the question the way your customer actually asks it, not the way you would phrase it internally.
  • Short, quotable claims. 'We help freelancers send professional invoices in under 2 minutes' is citable. 'We're the premier invoicing solution for modern professionals' is not.
  • Avoid hedge words in your most important claims. Phrases like 'we try to,' 'we aim to,' and 'in most cases' make content harder to cite than confident, specific statements.
  • Use headings that are full questions. H2s and H3s that read as questions are more likely to be matched to user queries than headings that are just topic labels.

Step 3 — Add the schema markup that signals AI citability

Schema markup is machine-readable metadata that tells AI systems what your content is about and what type of content it is.

  • FAQPage schema. Add this alongside your FAQ sections. It explicitly marks up your Q→A pairs as FAQ content, which is the highest-signal schema type for AI citation. It takes under 30 minutes per page to implement.
  • Organization schema. Add this to your homepage. It establishes your brand name, description, URL, and social profiles as a canonical entity.
  • SoftwareApplication schema. Add this to your product page. It tells AI systems your product name, category, platform, and pricing model — the exact information they need to recommend you.
  • Article schema on content pages. Article schema marks your content pages as citable reference material rather than transient web content.

Step 4 — Build external authority signals

AI systems were trained on human-curated content and have inherited human-curated notions of authority. Pages that other pages link to and mention are more trustworthy than pages that only exist in isolation.

  • Get listed on G2 and Capterra. These are high-authority sources that AI systems have extensive training data from. A listing takes an hour and creates a permanent external reference to your product.
  • Indie Hackers profile. For software products, an Indie Hackers listing is an authority signal that AI systems trained on tech content pick up strongly.
  • Pursue one newsletter mention or guest post. An external mention from a newsletter your audience reads is a backlink and an authority signal. One genuine external mention is worth more than 20 identical directory listings.
  • Consistent social profiles. Claim your brand name on LinkedIn, X, and any platform your users are on, and make your product description consistent with how you describe it on your site.

Step 5 — Monitor and iterate

AI citation is not a one-time exercise. Check your citability monthly and iterate.

  • Search your primary use case in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews: 'what's the best tool for [your use case]?' and 'how do I [the problem your product solves]?'
  • Note which competitors are being cited and look at their content. What format are they using? What specific claims are being quoted?
  • For queries where you appear but a competitor appears above you, identify whether the difference is content format, authority, or specificity. All three are fixable.

The 5 GEO mistakes most founders make

Mistake 1: Treating GEO as a separate project from SEO.
The tactics are not separate. FAQ sections, clear structured content, external authority signals — these improve both your search ranking and your AI citability simultaneously. Treat GEO as the AI layer on top of good content practice, not as a replacement for it.

Mistake 2: Writing for Google and hoping ChatGPT notices.
Google and ChatGPT use different signals. Google rewards topical depth and backlinks. ChatGPT rewards specificity, direct Q→A format, and consistency of claims across sources. The overlap is significant but the differences are real.

Mistake 3: Ignoring schema markup because it feels technical.
FAQPage schema is the single most direct signal you can send to AI citation systems. It is a JSON-LD block in your page's head element, following a documented template that takes under an hour per page to add. Most founders skip it because it sounds like infrastructure. It is the most leveraged 30 minutes you can spend on GEO.

Mistake 4: Expecting results in days.
AI citation patterns shift as models are retrained and as crawlers revisit pages. Changes you make today typically take 2–8 weeks to show up in citation behaviour. The window for tracking is monthly, not daily.

Mistake 5: Measuring AI citations manually and infrequently.
Manual checks are a start but not a system. Test across multiple AI engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews behave differently and cite different sources. Test for your key queries monthly, because citation patterns change as competitors improve their content.

Your 60-day AI citability plan

Week 1: Technical foundation. Ensure key pages are crawlable, submit sitemaps, add Organization and SoftwareApplication schema to your homepage and product page.

Week 2: Content audit. Identify your 3 key product queries — the questions your ideal customer asks when researching tools like yours. Check where you currently appear in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews for each.

Week 3: Add FAQ sections to your homepage and product page. 8–12 direct Q→A pairs per page. Write the questions as your customer would actually phrase them.

Week 4: Add FAQPage schema markup to the pages where you added FAQ sections.

Month 2, Week 1: Get listed on G2 and Capterra. Create or update your Indie Hackers profile. Ensure your product description is consistent across your site, both directories, and your social profiles.

Month 2, Week 2: Write one piece of external content — a guest post, a newsletter pitch, a detailed forum answer. One credible external mention is a significant authority signal.

Month 2, Week 3–4: Recheck your 3 key queries across all four AI engines. Compare your current citation rate to your baseline from week 2. Identify which queries improved and which did not. Diagnose the gap and iterate.

Month 3 onwards: AI citability compounds. Each external mention adds to your authority signal. Each content update increases your chances of being cited. Check monthly and iterate.

FAQ

How long does it take to start appearing in ChatGPT answers after making these changes?

Typically 2–8 weeks. AI systems retrain periodically and crawlers revisit pages on their own schedule. Changes you make today are not immediately visible. Test monthly rather than daily.

Does Google's AI Overviews use the same signals as ChatGPT?

No — they use overlapping but different signals. Google AI Overviews weight Google's own ranking signals heavily; ChatGPT and Perplexity weight different training data. This is why appearing in one does not guarantee appearing in the others. The tactics in this guide improve citability across all major AI engines, but the degree of improvement varies by engine.

Is GEO only useful for software products?

No — but the tactics are particularly effective for software products because software buyers are disproportionately likely to use AI assistants for product research. Local businesses, professional services, and content publishers all benefit from GEO, but software products have the most to gain right now.

Do I need to pay for any tools to track my AI citations?

Not to start. Manual testing — typing your key queries into ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews and reading the results — costs nothing and gives you a meaningful baseline. Purpose-built tracking tools automate this at scale, but start with manual testing to understand your current position.

Will adding FAQ sections hurt my page design?

Done well, no. FAQ sections placed at the bottom of a page above the footer add value for readers who want quick answers and do not disrupt the reading experience for visitors who scroll linearly. They are a net positive for conversion as well as citability.

What if my competitors are already being cited and I'm not?

Look at their content. What format are they using? What specific claims are being cited? What external mentions do they have? The most common gap is one of three things: their FAQ sections are more directly written, their schema markup is more complete, or they have more external authority signals. All three are fixable.

Can I be cited in AI answers for queries that my competitors currently dominate?

Yes — AI citation is not zero-sum in the way that a page-1 search ranking is. Multiple sources can be cited in a single AI answer. The goal is not to displace a competitor from every mention but to be included in the set of cited sources. Being cited alongside a competitor is a win, not a failure.

What's the relationship between my AI citations and my organic search traffic?

They compound. Pages that are cited by AI systems tend to receive more clicks from users who see the citation and want to learn more. External mentions that improve AI citability also improve domain authority, which improves search rankings. Work on one is almost never wasted on the other.

ChatGPT is one of four AI platforms you should optimize for.

Each platform has different citation logic. Perplexity cites 3-6 sources per answer. Google AI Overviews appear before organic results. Claude is the most selective — but has a 3.2x citation boost for sites with llms.txt.

Getting cited in AI answers is not luck. It is a set of specific practices that most products have not implemented yet — which means the window is open.
