Citation Reach Beats Domain Authority for AI Citations — Wellows 2026 Study

TL;DR

Citation reach — being cited on topics outside your niche — predicts AI citation probability 75% better than domain authority. Wellows Research analyzed 382,176 AI answers across 5 engines and found reach correlates 0.37 with future citations vs 0.21 for DA. ChatGPT's topic coverage signal is nearly zero.

Citation reach — being cited on topics outside your niche — predicts AI citation probability 75% better than domain authority. That's the headline from Wellows Research's 382,176-answer study across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode. Domain authority correlates 0.15–0.21 with future citations. Citation reach correlates 0.29–0.37. On ChatGPT specifically, topic coverage matters almost not at all.

What the Study Found

Wellows Research analyzed 382,176 AI-generated answers to 9,471 English-language prompts across 151 topics from January to June 2026. They measured two signals:

  • Citation reach — how often a domain is cited on topics other than the one being measured. Cross-topic brand presence.
  • Domain authority — the traditional SEO metric (Moz DA in this case).

The correlation numbers are precise and consistent across all five engines:

  • Citation reach: 0.37 (Gemini), 0.29 (ChatGPT, Perplexity)
  • Domain authority: 0.15–0.21 across all engines

Citation reach wins on every single platform. But the ChatGPT-specific finding is more interesting: among sites with similar reach, topic coverage correlates 0.043 on ChatGPT vs 0.208 on Google AI Overviews. That's nearly zero. The study's exact wording: “Among sites with similar reach, topic coverage matters far less on ChatGPT than on any other engine.”

Translation: for ChatGPT citations, brand-wide authority spread across the web matters more than deep topical expertise.

Why It Matters

1. The SEO playbook is backwards. The industry spent 15 years optimizing for domain authority — backlinks, DR, Moz DA. Those correlate 0.15–0.21. Citation reach correlates 0.29–0.37. You've been chasing the weaker signal.

2. Deep expertise alone doesn't win on ChatGPT.If you're a niche expert with no brand presence outside your category, ChatGPT is the hardest engine to crack. Google AI Overviews still rewards topical depth (0.208 correlation). ChatGPT doesn't (0.043).

3. Broad beats deep. A brand cited across 20 unrelated topics outperforms a domain with 80 DA publishing only in one vertical. Citation reach is a volume game, not a depth game.

4. Most brands are invisible everywhere.Supporting data from Boring Marketing's live benchmark (October 2026): 54% of brands are invisible on all four major AI platforms (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity). The citation rates:

PlatformCitation Rate
Claude7.7%
ChatGPT12.2%
Gemini17.0%
Perplexity17.5%

Claude is the most selective. Perplexity is the most generous. But none of this matters if you're in the 54% with zero citations anywhere.

5. Self-citations dominate.51.7% of all citations point to a brand's own pages. If you're not cited, it's not because other sources are crowding you out. It's because your content isn't in the training data, the retrieval index, or the live web corpus these engines actually read.

What to Do

1. Stop chasing domain authority as a proxy for AI visibility. It correlates, but weakly. Focus on the signal that actually predicts citations: reach. Get cited on topics outside your core category.

2. Publish outside your niche. If you're a SaaS analytics company, publish on hiring, remote work, product design, pricing strategy — anything adjacent where you have genuine insight. Citation reach is measured by how many different topics cite you, not how deeply one topic does.

3. Prioritize ChatGPT differently than Google AIO. For Google AI Overviews, topical depth still matters (0.208 correlation). For ChatGPT, it barely registers (0.043). If ChatGPT is your priority, optimize for brand-wide authority. If Google AIO is your priority, deep expertise in one vertical still works.

4. Track your citation reach, not just your citation count.Count how many distinct topics outside your core category cite you. That's the number that predicts future visibility, not your total citation volume.

5. If you're invisible, start with one platform.54% of brands have zero citations on all four engines. Don't try to fix all of them at once. Pick the platform with the highest baseline citation rate (Perplexity at 17.5%, Gemini at 17.0%) and optimize there first. Once you're visible on one, the content and authority signals transfer.

Chad's Take

The SEO industry obsessed over domain authority for 15 years while the actual signal — brand presence across topics — was sitting right there. Citation reach correlates 75% stronger than DA, and nobody measured it because it didn't fit the backlink-chasing playbook. ChatGPT's 0.043 topic signal is the loudest part: deep expertise without broad brand authority loses. Publish widely, get cited everywhere, or stay invisible.
