Reddit Is Dead in ChatGPT (0.52%) — But Alive in Perplexity (46.7%)

// TL;DR

Reddit's ChatGPT citation share collapsed 86.4% in four days (Aug 14–17, 2026) — from 3.83% to 0.52%. The trigger: ChatGPT changed its query fan-out behaviour, not a model update. Perplexity still cites Reddit 46.7% of the time. Gemini Local cites business websites directly 60% of the time. Running one Reddit strategy across all AI platforms is now a guaranteed way to underperform on at least two of them.

Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations dropped from 3.83% to 0.52% between August 14 and 17, 2026 — an 86.4% collapse in four days. The same Reddit presence that drives 46.7% of Perplexity citations is now functionally invisible to ChatGPT. These numbers are not from the same update, the same model, or the same mechanism. They are three different platforms behaving three different ways, and the gap between them just became impossible to optimise around with a single strategy.

What changed

Promptwatch data tracking ChatGPT Search citations shows Reddit's share averaged 3.83% from July 18 to August 7, 2026. The first dip appeared August 8 — the same day ChatGPT changed its query fan-out behaviour. A second, larger drop hit August 14. By August 17, Reddit's citation share had settled at 0.52%.

This is not a model update. GPT-5.6 Sol is still the ChatGPT Search default. The change is in how ChatGPT generates and resolves its sub-queries — the fan-out mechanism that determines which sources get pulled for a given user question. When fan-out shifted, Reddit stopped appearing in the resolved source set at anywhere near its previous rate.

Search Engine Land reported the collapse on August 19. Qwairy flagged the same pattern on August 18. Both traced it to the August 8 fan-out change, not to any Google-side update or Reddit policy shift.

For context: this mirrors the September 2025 collapse where Reddit dropped from 60% to 10% citation share in ChatGPT. That one was triggered by a Google parameter change on Reddit's side. This one is triggered entirely by ChatGPT's own query resolution logic. The monitoring window is still open — the 0.52% figure has not yet stabilised.

The Gemini local data compounds the picture

A Steady Demand study published August 20, 2026 and covered by MarTech analysed Gemini's local AI citation behaviour. The findings:

  • Business websites (the brand's own domain) account for approximately 60% of Gemini Local citations
  • Reddit is Gemini Local's second-highest source at 13.7% — outperforming all local service directories combined
  • Angi, Thumbtack, and HomeAdvisor combined score below Reddit in Gemini Local citation share

Gemini Local is the opposite of ChatGPT Search in one important dimension: it prioritises direct business website content, not aggregators or UGC platforms. For a local business, having a well-structured, schema-annotated website matters more for Gemini Local visibility than any directory listing.

Why it matters

  1. Reddit effort now has a platform-specific ROI problem. Every Reddit thread you seed, every community you build presence in — it still compounds in Perplexity and Google AIO. It is now near-zero in ChatGPT Search. If ChatGPT is your primary AI referral channel, you are investing in a citation source that cannot convert.
  2. The platforms have diverged far enough that a single strategy cannot cover them. 46.7% (Perplexity) vs 0.52% (ChatGPT) is not a minor variance — it is a 90x gap. A brand that optimises for one is by definition underperforming on the other.
  3. For local businesses, Gemini Local reorders the priority stack. 60% direct website + 13.7% Reddit means your own content is worth 4.4x more than any individual directory. Directory-first local SEO strategies are misaligned with how Gemini Local sources answers.
  4. The collapse is mechanism-based, not algorithmic. ChatGPT's fan-out change is an internal query architecture decision, not a policy update. It can change again without announcement. Any strategy that depends on Reddit's ChatGPT performance being predictable is building on unstable ground.

What to do

The path forward is platform segmentation — treat citation strategy as three separate channels with different source preferences:

  1. Audit your current citation distribution by platform. Use a tool like Profound, BotRank, or Qwairy to measure your brand's citation share in ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, and Google AIO separately. Don't assume platform parity — the August data shows the gaps are extreme.
    • If ChatGPT is your strongest channel: de-prioritise Reddit. Build editorial authority on LinkedIn, brand-owned domains, and licensed-publisher PR (licensed publishers get a 48% ChatGPT citation premium).
    • If Perplexity is your strongest channel: Reddit still converts. Keep seeding contextually relevant threads. Perplexity values primary sources alongside UGC.
    • If Google AIO is your primary AI channel: Reddit holds at ~21% — worth maintaining, but AIO also weights E-E-A-T signals and top-10 organic rankings heavily.
  2. For local businesses: prioritise your own website over directories for Gemini. Add LocalBusiness schema with complete NAP data, Service schema for each service type, and Review/AggregateRating schema with actual customer reviews. Schema-annotated first-party content is what Gemini Local pulls from 60% of the time.
    • Target passage-level answers to common local queries on your own domain.
    • Directories (Angi, Thumbtack) are still worth maintaining for aggregator presence — but they are not the primary Gemini Local lever.
    • Reddit threads about your service category still carry 13.7% weight in Gemini Local — second place is significant if there's a genuine community discussion to seed.
  3. Set a monitoring threshold for the ChatGPT collapse. The 0.52% figure is not confirmed as stable — the monitoring window is open. If Reddit's ChatGPT share recovers above 2%, that's a signal the fan-out change was temporary. Below 1%: treat ChatGPT Reddit citations as structurally dead and don't plan around them.
  4. Reassign Reddit effort by channel match, not total effort. If you have been running a Reddit presence primarily for ChatGPT citations, that effort can be partially redirected. Candidates:
    • LinkedIn content (ChatGPT default model now cites LinkedIn as #1 source at 14.3%)
    • Brand website schema and structured content (Gemini Local primary source)
    • Primary research and original data (cross-platform E-E-A-T signal; information gain is a confirmed ranking factor post-March 2026 core update)
  5. Track citation attribution quarterly at minimum. Platform citation behaviour has now demonstrated it can shift 86% in four days. Annual or semi-annual GEO audits are not frequent enough to catch this kind of change before strategy has already diverged from reality.

Chad's take

The uncomfortable truth here is that most GEO strategies are still being built as if AI platforms are one channel. They are not. The August 14–17 data makes this explicit: Reddit at 0.52% in ChatGPT and 46.7% in Perplexity are not noise — they are the result of completely different retrieval architectures making completely different source selection decisions. What wins in Perplexity is an active liability in ChatGPT if you're spending budget on it expecting cross-platform returns. The practitioners who move first to per-platform citation measurement will spend less and appear more. Everyone else will keep averaging the platforms together and wondering why their aggregate numbers look fine while their ChatGPT visibility is zero.
