GPT-5.6 Sol Killed Reddit as a Citation Source — LinkedIn Is Now #1
Three independent studies confirm GPT-5.6 Sol's citation behaviour is now stable. Reddit collapsed from 60% to 10% citation share. LinkedIn accounts for 14.3% of ChatGPT Search responses — more than any editorial source. Brand/first-party pages now get cited at 61.4% under High effort mode, up 14 percentage points from GPT-5.5. If your GEO strategy still leans on Reddit or UGC, you're optimising for a model that no longer exists.
ChatGPT's citation engine changed permanently in September 2025. GPT-5.6 Sol, confirmed stable as of August 2026, is the model that locked in that change — and the data is finally clear enough to act on.
Reddit, once cited in roughly 60% of ChatGPT Search responses, now appears in around 10%. LinkedIn has climbed to 14.3% — the single highest citation share of any platform. Brand and first-party domain pages are cited at 61.4% of all responses under Sol's High effort mode, up 14 percentage points from GPT-5.5 Medium. Sol also deploys site: verification queries in 71% of searches (vs. 11% for GPT-5.5) before it cites — it is actively auditing your domain credibility before including you.
These numbers come from three independent studies, each with disclosed methodology: Writesonic's 50-prompt citation analysis comparing Sol vs GPT-5.5, Everything-PR's ChatGPT Citation Source Index covering 680M+ citations (published August 1, 2026), and Explainx.ai's Sol rollout analysis. They agree. The watch item is closed. The shift is not a model quirk — it is the new operating state of ChatGPT Search.
What the Data Shows
The full picture from the three studies, covering April–August 2026 data:
| Metric | GPT-5.5 | GPT-5.6 Sol |
|---|---|---|
| Brand/first-party citation rate | 47.2% | 61.4% |
| site: query verification usage | 11% | 71% |
| Reddit citation share | ~60% (early 2025) | ~10% |
| LinkedIn citation share | low | 14.3% |
| Avg response length | ~580 words | ~660–670 words |
| Citations per answer | 7–8 | 7–8 (unchanged) |
One additional August 6, 2026 change: OpenAI replaced the Instant/Thinking model picker with a "how much thought" effort slider for Plus and Pro users. The default now routes through Sol. This matters because citations per answer hold steady at 7–8 regardless of effort level — but brand citation rate is highest at High effort. Users engaging deeply with ChatGPT are more likely to see your brand pages cited.
Why It Matters
- Reddit-heavy GEO strategies are now dead weight. If your content plan included seeding Reddit threads or optimising for UGC community signals specifically to capture ChatGPT citations, that channel has delivered less than one-sixth of its former yield. The collapse happened in September 2025 and is fully confirmed. Reddit may still matter for Google AI Overviews — it does not matter for ChatGPT.
- LinkedIn is now the highest-leverage single investment for ChatGPT visibility. 14.3% citation share — more than Forbes, Wikipedia (now below 20%), or any editorial publication. LinkedIn company pages, LinkedIn articles, and employee posts are the dominant surface Sol cites. If your LinkedIn presence is thin or inactive, you are structurally disadvantaged in ChatGPT Search regardless of how well your website performs.
- Sol is verifying your domain before citing it. 71%
site:query usage means Sol actively checks whether your domain has accessible, indexable, well-structured content before it decides to include you. Thin sites, noindex pages, and broken canonicals now actively suppress citation rate — not just rankings. Technical SEO hygiene directly affects whether Sol quotes you. - First-party brand pages now outperform third-party editorial at High effort. 61.4% brand/first-party citation rate at High effort vs. 47.2% for GPT-5.5 Medium. The previous assumption — that third-party validation was the dominant signal because ChatGPT depended on Wikipedia and Reddit more than brand sites — no longer holds for Sol at full effort. Your own domain's authority has recovered as a direct signal.
- Longer responses mean each citation carries more prose context. 660–670 words vs 580 previously. Citation count hasn't changed (7–8), but each cited source now sits inside a longer, more detailed answer. That means the surrounding context — and whether it accurately describes your brand — matters more than it did for GPT-5.5.
What to Do
- Audit your LinkedIn presence immediately.
- Does your company page have a complete, up-to-date description using the exact language customers and AI systems use to describe your category?
- Are your founders and leadership publishing LinkedIn articles — not just reposts — that cite your own research and link to your domain?
- Is your company page being updated at least 2x per week? Recency matters for how Sol weights LinkedIn signals.
- Check: search ChatGPT for "[your category] [your city/market]" — does your LinkedIn page or any team member's article appear in citations? If not, this is a fixable gap.
- Pass the site: verification check Sol is running.
- Run
site:yourdomain.comin Google. Count indexed pages. Low count (<50 pages for a real business) signals thin content to Sol. - Check for noindex directives on pages that should be public: product pages, about pages, team bios.
- Verify your sitemap is clean and submitted. Sol is running
site:queries, and a broken sitemap will suppress the results it finds. - Core Web Vitals matters here: Sol's verification pass includes page accessibility. Slow pages that time out during verification are less likely to survive to the citation selection stage.
- Run
- Stop building Reddit content for ChatGPT citations.
- If you were seeding Reddit threads, sponsoring subreddits, or optimising for Reddit-style UGC signals with ChatGPT visibility in mind, reallocate that budget.
- Reddit still has value for Google AI Overviews and for Perplexity (which weights UGC differently). But the ChatGPT channel — which drives 87.4% of AI referral sessions — has largely abandoned it.
- Channel-specific GEO strategy is now non-optional. What works for Perplexity does not work for ChatGPT, and both differ from Google AI Overviews.
- Invest in first-party brand page depth, not just third-party mentions.
- The 61.4% brand/first-party citation rate at High effort means your own domain can now be your primary citation source in ChatGPT — if the content is substantive, structured, and self-sufficient enough that Sol can quote it directly.
- Target semantic completeness: every important page should answer its core question within 100 words and cover the full decision arc (What / Why / Options / Trade-offs / What to do).
- Add structured data: Organization schema with
sameAslinking your LinkedIn company page. This creates a machine-readable assertion that your domain and your LinkedIn page are the same entity — exactly the kind of cross-platform signal Sol's verification pass is looking for.
- Test at High effort explicitly.
- The brand citation rate difference (47.2% vs 61.4%) is effort-dependent. If you benchmark ChatGPT citation performance, use the High effort setting — that is the mode your most engaged, highest-intent users will choose.
- Track citations per query in your category at High effort. If brand pages are appearing at or above 61%, you are indexed correctly. Below 40% at High effort is a measurable problem with a fixable cause.
Chad's Take
The uncomfortable truth is that most GEO strategies in 2025 were essentially Reddit strategies with a GEO label on them — because that's what the data supported at the time. Those strategies are now wrong, and the teams that built them are optimising against a model that ceased to be the default nine months ago. Sol didn't change subtly; it reversed two of the most cited signals in the field. LinkedIn went from a secondary-mention-if-you-have-time to the single most important platform for ChatGPT visibility. Your LinkedIn company page now outranks your Wikipedia presence. If that hasn't reached your content team yet, it will — the question is whether it reaches them before or after your competitors act on it.
