ChatGPT and Perplexity Cite Different Domains 89% of the Time. Your GEO Strategy Shouldn't Pretend Otherwise.

// TL;DR

The 5W AI Platform Citation Source Index analyzed 680M citations and found only 11% overlap between ChatGPT and Perplexity source domains. If you're monitoring one platform, you're capturing less than 25% of your total AI visibility. Each platform has distinct citation behavior — and you need platform-specific signals to show up in all of them.

Most businesses track ChatGPT citations and call it a day. They're missing 75% of the picture.

The 5W AI Platform Citation Source Index (2026) analyzed 680 million citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews. The headline finding: only 11% of domains appear in both ChatGPT and Perplexity's top citations. That means 89% of the time, these platforms are pulling from completely different sources.

The implication is blunt: if you optimize for one platform, you're invisible on the others.

What Each Platform Actually Cites

The citation patterns aren't just different — they're structurally opposed.

ChatGPTdraws 65.5% of its responses from training data, with Wikipedia dominating at 47.9% of top-10 citations. It drives 77% of all AI-driven referral traffic, but most of that traffic comes from the narrow slice of domains it learned during training. If you weren't in the training corpus, you're starting from behind.

Perplexityis the inverse: Reddit accounts for 46.7% of its top-10 citations. It cites 21.87 sources per response (vs ChatGPT's 10.4) and shows a 26% preference for content published in the last 90 days. Implementation window for structural changes: 2–7 days. If you publish fresh, well-structured content with community signals, Perplexity will find it fast.

Claudeignores both Wikipedia and Reddit almost entirely (Wikipedia <0.1%, Reddit ~0%). It favors authoritative, technically precise, well-structured content — think government sites, research institutions, and well-documented technical resources. Implementation window: 14–45 days. Claude now holds 8.9% market share, up from 6% in March 2026. That's not a fringe platform anymore.

Google AI Overviewsputs YouTube at #1 (18.2% of citations) and leans heavily on E-E-A-T signals. Citation overlap with traditional top-10 organic results dropped from 76% to 38% in under a year. If you're ranking well organically, that no longer guarantees you'll show up in the AI answer.

Why This Kills One-Size-Fits-All GEO

The platforms don't just cite different domains — they reward different signals.

Optimizing for ChatGPT means positioning in training-data-heavy sources (Wikipedia, established publications) and building domain authority that carries forward into the model. Optimizing for Perplexity means publishing fresh content with community engagement signals and structured markup that survives rapid indexing. Optimizing for Claude means authoritative depth, technical precision, and clear information architecture. Optimizing for Google AI Overviews means E-E-A-T, schema markup, and multimodal content (especially video).

There is no single optimization path that hits all four. A Wikipedia-heavy strategy gets you into ChatGPT but leaves you invisible on Claude. A Reddit-and-freshness strategy wins Perplexity but does nothing for Google AI Overviews. A pure schema play helps Google but won't move the needle on Claude's preference for substantive, well-reasoned content.

The businesses winning AI visibility in 2026 are the ones running platform-specific signal strategies — not trying to force one approach across all four.

What This Means for Your Stack

If you're tracking only ChatGPT citations, you're measuring less than 25% of your AI search presence. The other 75% is happening on platforms with completely different source preferences.

The fix isn't more content. It's platform-aware content with the right signals for each system. That means:

  • Structured data (JSON-LD, schema.org) for Google AI Overviews
  • Freshness + community engagement signals for Perplexity
  • Authoritative depth and technical precision for Claude
  • Training-data positioning (citations from high-authority sources) for ChatGPT

And it means measuring all four platforms— not just the one that's easiest to track.

The 11% overlap number isn't a curiosity. It's the shape of the new search landscape. If your GEO strategy assumes the platforms cite the same sources, you're optimizing for a world that doesn't exist.
