# Google AI Overviews Now Link Out in 25% of Responses. Here's What Gets Cited.

TL;DR

Google AI Overviews started embedding external inline links — clickable anchors inside the overview body text — in over 25% of all AI Overview responses after September 11, 2026. The previous share was near zero. Inline link placement means actual click-through traffic to the publisher site. Citation panel listing means brand visibility only, with minimal clicks. These are not the same thing, and optimising for one no longer gets you the other.

Google AI Overviews started embedding external inline links — clickable anchors inside the overview body text — in over 25% of all AI Overview responses after September 11, 2026. The previous share was near zero. Peec AI data, surfaced by Malte Landwehr on X and reported by Search Engine Roundtable and Search Engine Watch on September 23, 2026, confirms the shift is sustained across 12+ days and growing. Inline link placement means actual click-through traffic to the publisher site. Citation panel listing — the old model — means brand visibility only, with minimal clicks. These are not the same thing, and optimising for one no longer gets you the other.

## What Changed

Prior to September 11, 2026, Google AI Overviews operated almost entirely via citation panel links: sources listed below the AI-generated summary, displayed when users expand "Show sources." Click-through rates from citation panels are low — the summary answers the question and most users never open the sources panel.

Inline links work differently. They appear as clickable anchors inside the body of the AI Overview itself — attached to specific claims, facts, or named entities within the generated text. A user reading the overview clicks the link naturally, without having to actively seek out a source.

The Peec AI data shows:

- **Share of AI Overviews containing external inline links: ~0% before September 11, 2026 → 25%+ after September 11, 2026**
- **Trend: sustained and growing across 12+ days of tracking**
- **Selection signal: inline links attach to specific, verifiable claims with named entities** — not to generic summary sentences

This creates a two-tier citation structure:

1. **Inline link** — clickable anchor in the overview body, drives actual CTR to the publisher
2. **Citation panel listing** — source listed below the summary, brand visibility only
3. **No mention** — not cited at all

Getting into tier 1 vs tier 2 is now a materially different outcome for your traffic.

Separately, Google is also testing AI Mode routing links within AIO content — links that route users to AI Mode follow-up sessions rather than to external publishers. These compete with inline external links but are still in test phase. This post addresses the external inline link surge, which is confirmed at scale.

## Why It Matters

1. **The citation model that drove GEO strategy for 18 months just bifurcated.** Getting into an AI Overview was the goal. Now the question is *where* in the overview — inline body or citation panel — and the traffic difference between them is substantial.
2. **Generic answer blocks get citation panel placement at best.** Google's inline link selection attaches anchors to specific, verifiable, claim-level sentences. A page that summarises a topic without stating exact facts, specific data points, or named entities does not give the AI a sentence to anchor a link to.
3. **The answer block specificity threshold moved.** Under the previous model, structured answer blocks with factual content earned citation panel inclusion. To earn inline placement, the answer block needs to be specific enough that a verbatim sentence or clause from it can appear in the overview body with a link attached. Vague, summary-level content cannot serve as inline anchor text.
4. **HowTo and Q&A schema now serve a narrower purpose.** These schemas help structure answer visibility. They remain useful for citation panel inclusion. But inline link eligibility is a content specificity signal, not primarily a schema signal — structured schema on a generic answer block does not upgrade it from panel to inline.
5. **Sites losing organic traffic to AI Overviews can now recapture some of it — but only with specific content.** The 10% organic traffic decline documented across 54 clients (Brainlabs, September 2026) was partly a consequence of AI Overviews answering questions without sending traffic back. Inline links are the mechanism by which some of that traffic returns — but only to pages with specific enough content to earn an inline anchor.

## What to Do

1. **Audit your current AI Overview appearances for citation tier.**

  - Use Google Search Console's AI Visibility report (globally live since September 2, 2026) to identify queries where your site appears in AI Overviews
  - For each appearance, determine whether you're in the citation panel (listed below the overview) or as an inline link (embedded in the body text)
  - Inline links will show as higher CTR per AI Overview impression — compare impression share vs CTR to identify panel vs inline appearances
  - If you're in the panel but not inline: your content is being cited but not linked — the gap is answer specificity

2. **Rewrite generic answer blocks into claim-level, linkable sentences.**

  - Inline links attach to specific, verifiable claims — exact stats, named entities, specific thresholds, original research findings
  - A sentence like "Answer blocks help with AI citations" does not earn an inline link. A sentence like "Sites with specific answer blocks in the top 40% of the page earned inline link placement in 25% of related AI Overview responses" does.
  - For each question your page targets, write at least one sentence that: (a) states a specific fact, (b) includes a number or threshold, (c) is source-attributable
  - Place these sentences in the first 40% of the page — inline link selection favours high-page content

3. **Structure answer blocks as direct response to the query entity, not the query topic.**

  - Inline links in AI Overviews attach to the specific claim being made about the entity in the query — the product, company, study, or named concept
  - Write your answer blocks entity-first: "The [entity] does X, achieving Y in Z scenario" not "Here's an overview of how X works"
  - Include the entity name in the first sentence of each answer block so AI Overview body text can anchor to it

4. **Don't restructure your HowTo and Q&A schema — refocus it.**

  - Schema markup for structured Q&A remains useful for citation panel inclusion and on-page semantic clarity
  - The new constraint is content specificity, not schema presence — adding more schema to generic content does not upgrade it to inline link eligibility
  - Audit the actual answer text inside your schema blocks: if each `acceptedAnswer` could be paraphrased as "it depends" or "there are several factors," it's not specific enough for inline placement

5. **Monitor the AI Mode routing link test separately.**

  - Google is testing a competing behavior where some AIO anchor links route to AI Mode sessions rather than external publishers — these reduce the referral value of AIO citations
  - This is still in limited test as of September 24, 2026. Track whether your Google Search Console AI visibility CTR holds or drops from current baseline
  - No specific mitigation is available yet — the inline link surge is actionable now, the routing link test is not

## Chad's Take

The uncomfortable truth: most GEO practitioners spent 2025 optimising to appear in AI Overviews, treating any citation as equivalent. The September 11 shift makes visible a quality tier that was always implicit — citation panel vs. no citation was the only distinction that existed before. Now there are three tiers, and the top tier requires content that is specific enough to serve as verbatim anchor text inside an AI-generated paragraph. The question most sites need to answer is not "how do we appear in AI Overviews" — they already do. The question is "how many of our current citations are panel listings that drive zero traffic, and what would we need to change to move them to inline?" For most sites, the answer is a content specificity problem, not a schema problem. You can't schema-markup your way out of generic copy.
